Day 96 -Things to Do

365 Things to do in Wilmington and the Cape Fear Region

Island of Lights Parade at Topsail is just one of the 365 things to do in Wilmington and the Capre Fear Region.

How Did it Begin in Wilmington and the Cape Fear Region?

This Flotilla had its humble beginning in 1993…Winter is boring so they decided to decorate boats and have them sail down the intracoastal waterway. The event started out small with about 11 boats…each decorating their boat. The Flotilla has endured… it is small but fun….flotilla 300x225 Day 96 Things to Do

Remind me again what is one of the best things to do in the Winter in Wilmington and the Cape Fear Region?

Attend the Flotillas. Come on out Friday November 26 to see what it is all about….. after that….head to Wrightsville Beach on Saturday for their Flotilla….another of the 365 things to do in Wilmington and the Cape Fear Region

We are now at Day 95: 365 Things to do in Wilmingon and the Cape Fear Region —-It’t Turkey Trot Time around the USA….Dick and Sandy started the Wilmington Turkey Trot in 2005. The Although actual turkeys do not trot, they probably would have if given the chance. The Turkey Trot is one of the largest Thanksgiving Day events around the country. Wilmington’s first trot sarted at 8:45 am. in 2005 at the Wrightsville Beach Loop. Dick and Sandy ran in the Turkey Trot in the Great Northeast of Upstate NY….in the dead of winter and in the sleet, snow and ice…. When they moved to NC they thought why not celebrate the holiday in the South….the weather is great! Their first event was to benefit Habitat for Humanity and some monies went to support the victims of Katrina on the Gulf Coast. What a wonderful way to start the day with your family and to give back to the community. They started the first year with 10 volunteers, mostly family. The subsequent years saw the Turkey Trot growing each year. After year three, they turned the event over to the benefactor – Cape Fear Habitat for Humanity. They have so many volunteers and year 4 was well attended as well. Each year the numbers grow and Habitat has been able to organize the event to accomodate the increase each year. Dick and Sandy attend and sponsor the event each year. “We douldn’t miss this event,” say Dick and Sandy. It is not only a great way to raise money for habitat, but is an event the family can enjoy from year to year.

Today, registration had to be closed down and participants now have to register on Site this Thursday….We are expecting over 800 this year. Next year the event will likely move to a sanctioned 5K race….maybe we will be the next Dallas with thousands attending this event.
It is so gratifying to see the families, the dogs, moms, dads, grandkids, students…..someone from every walk of life participating in this great event. See you there….registration on-site starts at 7:30pm with the race starting at 8:30 and the walk at 8:35am….refreshments, including Port City Java Coffee, prizes and lots of fun….the weather will be great, the company extraordinary and the feeling….WONDERFUL. Happy Thanksgiving and see you there. For more information visit www.Wilmingtonturkeytrot.com

The views are scenic of this beautiful beach town. You will see waterviews, salt marsh views and downtown Wrightsville Beach.
